English 11 Book Report

I Introduction/General Information about the book

Title
- To Kill A Mockingbird

Author
- Harper Lee

Type of Book
-Non-Fiction / Novel

II Characters

Main Character
Scout / Jean-Louis Finch
-In this story, the girl Jean-Louis Finch or nicknamed Scout is curious about his neighbor Boo Radley, his father is a lawyer that is a good person, who defends a negro, which is quite rare for white people to do during that time, she has a brother, Jem, and a very close negro friend, Dill, whom she regard as his boyfriend.

I can identify with the main character when her intelligents, ruggedness, and guts in attitude is shown by the writer.

Supporting Characters
Atticus Finch
-Is Scout's father, a very influencial person in Maycomb. He is respected for his attitude, and a hero amongst negro.
Jem
-The elder brother of Scout. He is close to his sister and Dill. They three often curiously investigate the house of Boo Radley
Arthur 'Boo' Radley
-Very mysterious person. Rarely got out of his house. The source of curiosity for the kids, Scout, Jem, and Dill.

III Setting

-Time is between the year 1900 - 1950, the place is in Maycomb, Alabama, USA
-The setting of time is logical which is during that that the discrimination among black colored people is still strong, and the way the writer explain and araange the time in the story makes the story more enjoyable to read.

IV Plot

-When September arrives Scout prepare for her first schooling while Dill went to another town.
Scout teacher was Mrs. Caroline who is angry at Mr. Atticus for advancely teach Scout how to read.
-Time came where there are real winter at Maycomb. The kids play happily with the snow. Collecting snow from their neighbor, Miss Maudie. Miss Maudie's house were accidently burn out during night time.
-Start at chapter 14, the story of Mr.Robinson's trial start, where the most interesting part of the story for me is during the court moment.
-When the trial finished Mr.Robinson was accused guilty of raping Ms.Mayella, the daughter of Bob Ewell, even though the evidence is actually on the side of Mr.Robinson.
- Next, Scout and Dill were attacked by someone upon going back from school, the attacker was intended to kill them.
-Next, it is found out that the attacker was Mr.Bob Ewell trying to revenge on Atticus who try to persecute him. The kids were helped by Mr.Boo Radley, who I think kill Bob Ewell in the process. Though, Jem was badly injured.

IV Theme

-The Author try to emphasize on the discrimination on coloured people though maybe it is indirect during the time, but it is clear to see the discrimination upon dark people. The moral is about discrimanation and the way we view a persons personality by actually understanding the person thoroughly, not by own self evaluation.
-The book open my eyes on the value of humanities and a person to person love and care regardless of differences, and the ability to connect and understand other people not through eyes but connection heart to heart.
-The problem in the story is about the false conviction of a negro guy, but the person who is actually committed the crime is finally end his life. It is told in this story that the actual convicted person deserve his death in the eye of the sheriff, where the sheriff does not convict Mr. Boo Radley who I think is actually the ones that kill Bob.Ewell.

VI

-I really appreciate the things i learned through this book, and the way the writer fluently and skillfully presented her english writing capabilities and adherence to law and order. Through reading this this book, I am more aware of the vast discrimination and inequality existed in this world, and most importantly in the phillipines alone, where people in values of other foreign country than their own, and how the rich over discriminate the poor.
